Since Stefan recently shared our employment contracts on Linkedin, it has been public knowledge: at Friendly we work remotely or “the employees work wherever they want”.
That’s why we value our annual retreats, where we can meet in person and exchange ideas, have a good time together and get to know each other better.
For our fourth team retreat in July 2024, we chose Ticino to spend a few days in the “sun lounge of Switzerland” in Locarno on Lake Maggiore.
The weekend was characterised by beautiful weather (not to be taken for granted after the cool and rainy early summer), good conversations and two unforgettable excursions. Here are a few impressions:
Contents
Thursday: Arrival and first explorations
We arrived in Locarno in the afternoon and settled into our cosy accommodation in the old town of Locarno. After an extensive aperitif with apricot spritz and local specialities, we set off on a stroll through the charming streets of Locarno.
We were impressed by our visit to the Sacred Mount Madonna del Sasso above the town, from where we had a breathtaking view of the surrounding area and the lake. We ended the day on the lakeside promenade in nearby Cannobio.
Friday: Hiking and swimming in the Verzasca Valley
We started Friday with a leisurely, hearty breakfast and then set off for the Verzasca Valley. Of course, we made a short stop at the Verzasca dam, made famous by the opening scene in the James Bond movie Goldeneye.
We really enjoyed the subsequent hike: we picked up wooden balls at the start of the path and explored the Bobosco Trail, a hiking trail with 13 creative ball track stations.
Afterwards, we cooled off in the fresh water next to the picturesque Ponte dei Salti bridge. Back at the accommodation, we cooked a traditional Ticino risotto together. The evening provided an opportunity for stimulating discussions about the future of Friendly. We enjoyed sharing our ideas and perspectives in person for once.
Saturday: Motorboat trip on Lake Maggiore
Saturday took us to the neighbouring town of Ascona, where a motorboat was waiting for us on Lake Maggiore.
After the first cautious manoeuvres on the water, Lukas and Stefan showed off their skills at the helm and definitely made the boat trip a highlight of the retreat.
We moored in Italy and had a delicious lunch in the recommendable Restaurant Europa. In the afternoon we found several beautiful bathing spots and enjoyed a relaxing time.
Sunday: Farewell and journey home
After breakfast on Sunday, we made our way home. We are grateful for the special time and the shared experiences.
Monday: The bill
Friendly covers all expenses for our employees on the company retreats. As an Open Startup, we also share this bill with you:
